Kmart Building Attracting Trash, Trucks
By David Kenney

Last summer we first told you about the damage vandals had caused to the old Kmart building on Beasley Road. Since then, the property owners have taken steps to secure the building. Now the problem is securing the parking lot.
Keep Jackson Beautiful Director Barbara Ryan was shocked as she ventured behind the old Kmart building.
Ryan says, "Those asphalt shingles, tires... there's no telling what else could be hazardous material in there."
In the last few weeks the space behind the building has become a dumping ground for trespassers on the property. Piles of clothes carpets and old TV's hidden behind the abandoned building.
Out front semi-trucks and trailers dot the landscape. They've even left some pretty big calling cards, huge potholes in the asphalt, where they're not supposed to even be.
Ryan says, "It's the responsibility of the property owner to clean this up."
Weeks ago there was word Burlington Coat Factory might buy the place, but now those talks are off. The realty company listing the property, C.B. Richard Ellis did say they had another buyer under contract. Good news for those trying to keep the mess from spreading to nearby neighborhoods.
Ryan says, "It's vital we make these people take care of their property so that it is clean and neat when prospects come in looking for to buy."
Those trying to sell the old Kmart were unaware of the dumping and the trucks parking on the lot. After we notified them Tuesday, they said they planned to take even more steps to keep their property clean and free of trespassers.
The realty company trying to sell the old Kmart property could not tell us the name of their potential buyer. We will keep you updated on any new developments with the property.
