Concerned Veterans Communication Coalition Reacts to Chairman Powell's Departure
Distribution Source : PRNewswire
Date : Friday - January 21, 2005
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement can be attributed to Ronald A. Duchin, Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) and Founder of the Concerned Veterans Communication Coalition.
"Chairman Michael Powell's announcement today that he will be stepping down from the FCC is welcome news to America's fighting men and women. Chairman Powell has been at the forefront of an effort at the Commission to impose new fees on calling cards that would force America's soldiers overseas to pay up to 20 percent more to communicate with their families, friends and loved ones back home.
We remain concerned that Chairman Powell's determined effort to raise the rates on the military and their families will damage the morale of our soldiers at a time when they are making substantial sacrifices to keep America safe.
To date, the Concerned Veterans Communication Coalition has generated thousands of letters and emails from military men and women and their families urging Chairman Powell and the FCC to abandon their efforts to raise the costs on military families to stay in touch with their loved ones fighting overseas. Additionally, more than 25 national military organizations including the USO, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and many others have written letters to Chairman Powell urging the FCC not to raise rates on the military. The letters can be viewed at our website: http://www.concernedvets.org/.
It is our sincere hope that the next Chairman of the FCC quickly puts an end to any further plans to raise calling card prices on America's military."
The Concerned Veterans Communication Coalition is a loose affiliation of retired Army and Navy officers, as well as volunteers, formed to stop the FCC from raising the calling card rates on military and their families.
